Sackville Gardens Project

The Sackville Gardens Project accommodates and supports 19 residents. The Project has three houses and two flats in Brighton and Hove, each of which provides supported accommodation for residents who have experienced mental health issues.

The Project consists of a house in Sackville Gardens which is a registered care home and conforms to care standards specified by the Commission for Social Care Inspectorate. This year, the registered care home in Sackville Gardens was awarded a grade of ‘excellent’, and so has gone from being a good service to being an excellent one.

The registered care home in Sackville Gardens accommodates 5 residents and the remit is to give people the opportunity to work on their daily living skills and learn to manage their mental health. There is also a lower level support house in Sackville Gardens which accommodates 5 clients with a lesser level of support than at the registered care home. Staff attend twice a day in order to provide support with whatever is at hand. This can range from prompting clients to take medication, to helping them fill in forms, to simply saying good morning to them.

There is also a four bedroom house in Bevendean which is run on an outreach basis, where a member of staff will attend four or five times a week, providing support, for two or three hours at a time. The other two projects are a two bedroom flat in Brighton, and we support the two clients there by way of twice weekly appointments, one for an hour, and one for half an hour.

Finally there is a dual diagnosis project for those people who have a mental health issue and are also in recovery from drug or alcohol misuse. Located in Buckingham Road, this is an abstinent based project.

Romanie Palmer, the registered manager of the Sackville Gardens Project says “There is an awful lot of support here. We help people with managing their finances, we help people with managing their living spaces, with personal hygiene, with their relationships, and with life skills, such as cooking, as well as providing individual support within the care programme approach”

The project works in partnership with the Sussex Partnership NHS Trust and the Mental Health Placement Officer in the Housing Options Team at Brighton and Hove City Council. The local Primary Care Trust partly funds this service.

Romanie Palmer, the registered manager, says “If a member of my family had a mental health issue, would I be happy for them to be here? The answer is yes. I would be delighted for them to get a place somewhere like Sackville Gardens. That is the standard that we try to maintain”.

We work in partnership with the Sussex Partnership NHS Trust and the Mental Health Placement Officer (Housing Options Team) at Brighton and Hove City Council. The local Primary Care Trust partly funds the service.

The Registered Care Home is regulated by the Commission for Social Care Inspection with announced and unannounced yearly inspections, further information can be found at www.csci.org.uk
