Firm Foundations is a lottery funded project based in Brighton & Hove which will create better life chances for 900 insecurely housed or homeless men and women. Through enabling access to work and learning projects and empowering them to obtain independent accommodation in the private rented sector.

We will achieve this in three stages:

Stage One

Individual assessments for each client at which they will identify their strengths and develop an initial action plan to take steps towards their goals. Clients will be signposted to appropriate work and learning projects within the City.

StageTwo

A one day course designed to empower clients to access the private rented sector and overcome traditional barriers that have faced those reliant on benefits or on a limited income. The course will also inform clients about the rights and responsibilities of both tenants and landlords.

As part of the course clients will develop a portfolio of qualities which will include references that demonstrate to potential Landlords that they will make good tenants. Clients will also be provided with a guide to enable them to manage their tenancy.

Stage Three

Following completion of the one day course, clients will be eligible for ongoing support whilst they seek accommodation and during any subsequent tenancy they obtain. This support will be provided by both the Firm Foundations team and a Peer Support programme provided by volunteers who have successfully made the move to independence in the private rented sector. Support will also be available for Landlords

By enabling access to work and learning and independent private accommodation, the project will help clients to break the cycle of homelessness and unemployment and thus move forward to independence.
