Please note that First Base is a service that requires annual fundraising to meet its running costs.  Therefore, priority for taking part in our corporate volunteering scheme will be given to companies that are able to make donations to fund the service. Amounts shown below are a suggestion.

The term “homelessness” covers a wide range of circumstances from sleeping on the streets, sofa surfing, to families living in bed and breakfast accommodation.

We offer the opportunity for a group of employees to visit our First Base day centre in Brighton to learn from staff about the important work that goes on there. First Base staff will explain to your group about the different types of homelessness and the issues homeless people face.

Your Homelessness Awareness Session will include a tour of our First Base day centre, a presentation from a staff member, refreshments, and a Q&A session at the end.

Commitment: Minimum 3 months

Frequency: Weekly

Time: 7.30am-12 noon

Number of volunteers: 2 volunteers each week

Donation: £5,000

First Base provides non-residential support for homeless men and women in Brighton and Hove.

First Base operates an early morning session from 8am daily for people who are sleeping rough. This session provides access to information and advice from caseworkers, hot nutritious food, showers, and laundry facilities. The centre also provides a base for our partner organisations to meet with their clients and deliver health care and other specialist services.

In addition to this, First Base run a number of other activities for homeless and vulnerably housed clients.  These include a catering training project, a health promotion and awareness project and workshops, volunteer opportunities and training to assist people back into work.

Your company can apply for a 3-month, 6-month, or longer term First Base volunteering placement. Each week you will be required to send 2 volunteers on your agreed day for the early morning session. Most companies create a pool of volunteers who are then put on a rota. Before the start of the placement, a member of staff from BHT will visit your workplace to deliver a briefing session to those employees who will be taking part in the placement.

Tasks include: making teas and coffees, clearing up after breakfast, sorting out donations, helping with laundry, chatting to clients and helping them use the facilities.

Commitment: 1 day

Number of volunteers: 5-10

Donation: £5,000

From time to time we have opportunities for small groups to do a specific project within one of our services, usually involving the redecoration or renovation of an indoor or outdoor space. This is a valuable opportunity to make a lasting and visible impact on the lives of our service users, whilst team building with colleagues outside of the workplace. Get in touch to find out what opportunities we have available.

If you or the company you work for has a specific skill set that could make a difference to the lives of BHT clients then we would love to hear from you! This could be related to employability and training, for example CV workshops and mock interviews, or perhaps you can offer health and beauty treatments such as haircuts or hand massage. Get in touch with our fundraising team today and we can put something together!
