Brighton business, Bagelman, launched a new Pay It Forward Scheme in its four stores across the city this week.
The scheme enables customers to pay for an additional coffee or a coffee and a bagel, alongside their own order, which can then be claimed by someone who is unable to afford a drink or a meal. Each time a donation is made a marble representing a coffee or a meal will be placed in a jar on the store’s counter. This system will enable people to see whether there are any donated coffees or bagels available at any given time.
With profit from the scheme being donated to First Base Day Centre, not only will it provide nutritious food for some of the city’s most vulnerable people, but it will also support BHT to help people who are rough sleeping in the city to move away from life on the streets. In partnership with other agencies, First Base offers health care services, showers, clean and dry clothes, and person-centred advice to support people to access accommodation and learning-focused opportunities.
The scheme is one of a number of initiatives being introduced through the community partnership. Bagelman will also be offering skills-development workshops to clients of BHT, to support people on their journey into employment. The workshops will focus on team work, communication, confidence-building and customer service, and will enable people who have not worked before, or who are returning to employment, to develop their personal and social skills and to better understand the expectations of the workplace.
We are becoming increasingly aware of street homelessness in Brighton and Hove, and finding ways to support people who are rough sleeping is something we’re really keen to do. Many of our customers share our ethos and we’ve already had a positive response to the Pay It Forward Scheme. We look forward to continuing our work with BHT through this community partnership.
