As a paramedic I have seen homelessness rise, I wanted to do something to help

Emma Ticehurst, a paramedic and mother of two, is training to run the Brighton Marathon in April to fundraise for BHT.

She has always enjoyed sports and fitness and after having two children she decided that it was time for a new challenge.

After joining Pro-fit training classes and getting her fitness back, she decided to run the Brighton Half Marathon to fundraise for BHT.

Working as a paramedic, Emma has seen an increase in the number of people sleeping rough in Brighton and a rise in the number of vulnerable men and women that she sees in her job.

She felt that she wanted to do something to help, and felt that fundraising for BHT’s First Base Day Centre would be a good way to do it.

She started her training in October and trained all through the rainy and cold winter months that followed.

Emma completed the Brighton Half Marathon in 1 hour and 48 minutes, an amazing time and better than she had hoped for. As she crossed the finish line she was already thinking about her next challenge and made the decision that she would run the Brighton Marathon for BHT and continue to raise money for First Base Day Centre.

With only six weeks to progress from a half marathon runner to a full someone who can run 22 miles, Emma has had to really train hard.

With two weeks to go until the big day, Emma feel confident.

I know it’s going to be hard, I can feel my legs really started to ache after 21 miles so I know that last bit is going to be a real challenge but I feel confident.

I have surprised myself with my running; I have come a long way in a short time and am really enjoying the challenge.

I don’t know how things will go on the day but I really hope that I can complete the Brighton Marathon in under four and a half hours, and then who know, maybe the London Marathon next!
