Support 4 Housing Event to Launch ‘Read Aloud’

Support 4 Housing, a BHT and Southdown Housing partnership project has hosted the Read Aloud launch event.

Caroline Lucas MP, Brighton and Hove Mayor, Cllr Bill Randall and Lisa Rodrigues, Chief Executive at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, attended the launch to celebrate the start of the Read Aloud groups in Brighton and Hove.

The event saw the start of a five month project to develop Read Aloud groups in the city and encourage people with mental health problems to read aloud together to improve their health and wellbeing.

The Read Aloud groups, funded by the Big Lottery’s Award for All programme, will be run by trained volunteers under the guidance of mental health professionals.

The aim of the project is to improve the lives of its participants as well as offering mental health professionals and volunteers training and a chance to develop their life skills.

The City Reads chosen book was confirmed to be The Policeman by Brighton based Bethan Roberts.

The Read Aloud groups will finish the book by October in time for the Brighton and Hove Big Read. (A series of events held to celebrate debate and discuss a book of choice.)

Support 4 Housing is a partnership service between BHT and Southdown Housing Association. It provides housing related support to 300 individuals and families in Brighton and Hove and its surrounding areas.

We were really pleased to be asked to host the launch event and it was great to see so many people there.

We are also holding a Read Aloud book group at the Support4Housing drop in so it was great to find out what book we will all be reading. I am looking forward to sharing the Policeman with our clients.
