Asbestos
Asbestos was commonly used in building materials until 1999. If it is undisturbed and intact, it usually is not harmful. Once broken or deteriorated, it can release fibres that may lead to serious illnesses like mesothelioma.
Our responsibilities as your landlord
We have completed asbestos surveys for buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
We manage any materials that contain asbestos through a formal asbestos register and management plan and only remove or repair them when repair or renovations are needed, in line with UK safety rules.
From mid‑2025, we will start labelling known asbestos areas in communal interior spaces, where safe and practical to do so (excluding outside or roof areas).
Your responsibilities as a tenant
If you plan any DIY or home improvements, check the asbestos register first via your Housing Officer.
Never scratch, drill, or break any materials that may contain asbestos - even if you think they might be harmless.
If a material is damaged, you suspect disturbance of asbestos materials, or you detect something that looks like asbestos debris, report it immediately.
