First Base partners with Community Calling to boost digital inclusion

We are proud to announce that First Base Day Centre is now partnering with Community Calling, an initiative that provides reconditioned smartphones to those in need. This collaboration supports our mission to promote digital inclusion and reduce electronic waste, while directly improving the lives of our clients experiencing homelessness across Brighton and Hove.

We’ve recently received our first delivery of 100 smartphones, which are now being distributed to our clients who need them most. Each phone comes installed with 12 months free calls, texts, and data from the data bank.

What is often just seen as a ubiquitous necessity to most people, a smartphone can be a lifeline for someone experiencing homelessness, offering access to:

  • Maps and navigation – to find their way around the city, locate food banks, medical services, and other vital locations.
  • Email and internet access – essential for staying in touch with caseworkers, applying for jobs, and accessing online services.
  • Translation tools – helping non-English speakers communicate more effectively and access services.
  • Universal Credit and benefits management – enabling clients to apply for and manage their benefits independently.
  • Health services – including booking GP appointments, accessing NHS information, and managing prescriptions.
  • Housing applications – allowing clients to search and apply for accommodation online.
  • Social connection – staying in touch with friends, family, and support networks.
  • Safety and emergency contact – being able to call for help or receive alerts and updates.

This initiative is already making a meaningful impact, and we’re excited to see how it continues to support our clients.
