BHT proud to provide crucial women-only services

This International Women’s Day, BHT celebrates its specialist women’s services, which provide a lifeline to so many women in Brighton and Hove.

On Saturday 9 March, BHT’s Threshold Women’s Services will join an inspiring collection of charities, speakers and activists at an event at Brighton Dome, running an all-day stall where people can find out more about the support offered.

Threshold’s women-only services include counselling, maternal mental health support, therapeutic drop in activities, yoga, wellbeing groups and childcare facilities.

Melanie Barnard, Operational Manager of BHT’s Threshold Services, said:

We are excited to be taking part in this event and spreading awareness about the vital services that we have to offer vulnerable women in our city. Women in one of our weekly Women’s Wellbeing drop-in sessions have been busy preparing an interactive game for the event which will raise awareness about gender imbalance – come along on Saturday and find out more!

Some of Threshold’s popular weekly therapeutic drop-in groups include Art and Chat, and Monday Wellbeing. These provide a safe space in which women can talk about and learn to understand their mental health with their peers.

Creche facilities make activities much more accessible to women with children and mean they can reach more people needing support. More than 150 women used the Threshold Women’s Counselling Service last year.

Threshold is being supported this year by independent radio station 1BTN, who will be raising funds during their International Women’s Day Takeover today – to find out more or donate click here.

Others across BHT are developing special provisions for women within their services. For example, First Base, our Day Centre for men and women who are sleeping rough or insecurely housed in the city, has started a weekly women’s group where women are able to discuss and support each other through challenges they face.  This weekly quieter space is much appreciated by those attending, and provides opportunities for meaningful engagement in activities in a relaxed and safe space.
