Local mayors honour BHT Sussex volunteers

Volunteers’ Week takes place during the first week of June each year and shines a spotlight onto the millions of people who volunteer across the UK. As part of our celebrations, we co-hosted receptions with the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, and the Mayor of Burgess Hill.

At Brighton Town Hall, a number of volunteers, our CEO, David Chaffey, and members of staff were welcomed by the Mayor, Amanda Grimshaw, to the Council Chamber. Both Amanda and David spoke at the reception, emphasising the gratitude they both have for volunteers from BHT Sussex, and the impact they make on our services as well as the city of Brighton and Hove as a whole. Following these speeches, volunteers were treated to tea, coffee and cake and learnt more about the Mayoral position and the building itself. Some volunteers and staff were even lucky enough to hold the Mayoral mace and were informed about its interesting history.

Following the Brighton reception, volunteers in Burgess Hill were thanked at a reception at Burgess Hill Town Hall, attended by the Mayor of Burgess Hill, Stuart Condie. We have a large number of volunteers in Burgess Hill because our Pathfinder service is based there. Pathfinder has many volunteers, including a group of Peer Mentors who help people with their mental health struggles using their own lived experiences. Volunteers were presented with certificates and mingled with the Mayor and BHT Sussex staff who all expressed their gratitude for the dedication to their community that our volunteers show.

As well as through mayoral receptions, we also highlighted some of our volunteers through a video posted on our social media channels. You can view the video here:
