BHT Sussex volunteers honoured by Mayor of Brighton

Every year, we celebrate the amazing volunteers who make a difference to their local community during Volunteers’ Week. The week takes place annually during the first week of June and shines a spotlight onto the millions of people who volunteer across the UK. Following on from our mayoral reception in Burgess Hill earlier this week, we attended a reception hosted by the Mayor of Brighton, Theresa Fowler, on Friday morning.

At Brighton Town Hall, six volunteers, our CEO, David Chaffey, and members of staff were welcomed by the Mayor to the Mayoral Chamber. Both Theresa and David spoke at the reception, emphasising the gratitude they both have for volunteers from BHT Sussex, and the impact they make on our services as well as the city of Brighton and Hove as a whole. Volunteers were each presented with certificates by the Mayor as David highlighted what each volunteer does for our organisation including cooking food, organising donations and supporting clients with their mental health.

Following the presentation, volunteers were treated to tea, coffee and cake and learnt more about the Mayoral position and the Town Hall itself. Everyone was even lucky enough to hold the Mayoral mace and were informed about its interesting history.

Theresa had this to say,

National Volunteers’ Week offers us an important opportunity to pause, reflect, and most importantly, to express our sincere gratitude to those who give so generously of their time. Volunteers are the foundation of so many of our communities. Their efforts are driven not by recognition, but by kindness, empathy, and a belief in the power of people coming together to create positive change.”

Thank you to all our volunteers past and present who have contributed to BHT Sussex projects and services!
